If there was a night for the end of the world, Thom decided, it would be this one.
He and Jonny were lying on their backs in the grass in a park, somewhere... somewhere neither of them knew the name of, surrounded by what felt like the whole of humanity watching the last sunset they would ever see. Jonny's head was resting on his chest, dark eyes cast upwards at the crimson-indigo-gold-streaked sky, fingers interlaced with Thom's. He wasn't crying, like so many of the people nearby. His lips were parted and he was breathing deeply, as though trying to take in as much as possible before it came. Thom stroked his hair with his free hand.
"What are you thinking?" he murmured. In the still quiet of that evening, every word seemed deafening as it fell into silence.
"You asked me once what I'd do with the last ten minutes of my life, do you remember?" Jonny's voice was slow, heavy, thick with unspoken emotion.
It had been a long time ago, but... "Yeah," Thom replied. Night was falling fast like a black curtain over the heavens, shutting out the sun.
"And you remember what I said to you?"
It must have been ten years ago or more.
"Jon... if the world was going to end in ten minutes, how would you spend them?"
Jonny had looked at him with an odd smile, fingers tracing the hard outline of bare hipbone and raising goosebumps on sensitive skin.
"With you inside me, of course."
"You're sure?"
He could sense the smile on Jonny's lips, even though he wasn't looking.
"Would you do that for me?"
Thom shifted, sitting up a little, and Jonny's head fell back into his lap. Their eyes met. Jonny's were sparkling fire, the gentle caress of his fingertips on the back of Thom's hand reminding him of how much he loved him.
"Turn over. On your side." He was surprised he could still talk; his throat felt as though it was closing up. Jonny rolled out of his lap, his cheek pressed into the grass, and Thom made short work of the layers of clothing between them. No one seemed to notice. They were all staring at the sky.
Thom pushed inside quickly. Jonny let out a small moan and Thom felt his heart break. He wrapped his arms around Jonny's narrow waist and held him tightly, placing soft kisses on the curve of his neck while the taller man trembled and shuddered against him, hands clenching and unclenching as they clawed at Thom's sides.
"Thom..." he whispered brokenly. "I... love... you."
Thom pulled back his hips and thrust sharply, and a high-pitched gasp escaped Jonny's throat.
"I love you too, Jon."
Jonny was crying now, and Thom realised with a shock that there were tears on his own cheeks and he couldn't tell why they were there. He dug his nails into Jonny's hips and they made love brutally, desperately, while the people around them keened and wailed and became a solid, screaming mass of terror. When his climax came, it felt like the world was ending.
And then it was.
